THE SEARCH FOR SYRIA’S MISSING

I worked alongside Rhiona-Jade Armont, an SBS Dateline producer on her Walkley Nominated interactive website telling the stories of survivors of the Syrian War as they uncovered the fate of their missing family members. This project also highlights the serious war crimes committed by the Assad Regime against its own civilians. My role was designing still and interactive visual features for audiences to understand the chaotic and destructive war that ravaged Syria for over a decade.

I created a map timelapse using data from The Carter Center showing the dramatically shifting war zones that displaced and killed thousands of civilians and destroyed cities, towns and homes.

The producer wanted a sombre missing persons toll that forced the audience to scroll through as the numbers tick up before being able to move on.

We wanted to break down the statistics of those responsible for the disappearance of 111,907‬ civilians in a way that was visually interesting. Each dot in this interactive graph represents one civilian. We used the Damask Rose as a motif throughout the website as it is a symbol of Syrian identity.
